Dancer/photographer Sarah Hodges brought grace and power to her mesmerizing performance as "Madame Pele," leaving an indelible impression on all who attended the Closing Reception for the Artists of Hawaiʻi Biennial 2024. Mahalo to “Madame Pele’s” creator, Cheryl Flaharty, also Creative Director of IONA Contemporary Dance Theatre, for sharing her stunning wearable art piece with us in this way!

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this year’s exhibition extraordinary—the artists, support staff, and our esteemed juror, Tom Klobe.

JUROR: Tom Klobe
University of Hawaii at Manoa Art Department professor emeritus and founding director of the University of Hawaii Art Gallery
During Tom’s 29-year tenure at U.H., he organized and designed over 200 exhibitions, five of which received the prestigious Print Casebook Award for Best in Exhibition Design. Tom’s interests in the visual arts span a broad range of materials and techniques. Between 1966 and 1976, Tom created over 60 paintings and sculptures that explored human perceptions of space. Art, science, and religion came together in his work, which grew from his awe of space exploration and his deep respect for the people of the Middle East, which he gained as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Iran in the mid-60s.

2024 Juror’s Statement

I am honored to serve as juror for Artists of Hawai‘i 2024 and appreciate the opportunity it affords to experience the breadth and depth of visual creativity throughout the State of Hawai‘i. While it is a pleasure to witness the impressive spectrum of local talent evident in the artwork submitted, the task of selecting those works for the exhibition that are extraordinary in creativity, craftsmanship, and presence remains a challenge and responsibility.

Art must communicate on two levels, the visual and the conceptual, and it is the interaction of these two forces that serve as the primary determinant in selection. Technical skill can be learned, but technical proficiency alone is not enough. The result must be unique, introspective, and distinctive.

I look for artistic merit, passion, honesty, and a confidence displayed by the artist that indicates mastery of the subject, materials, and technique. But the works have to appeal to the mind as well as the eye.

I was impressed by the individual honesty of the artists evident in all of the submitted work. This makes the jurying process such an arduous responsibility. I extend my gratitude to everyone who entered, and encourage you all to keep working, challenging yourselves, and going beyond your expectations.
— Juror Tom Klobe
