Go Figure: Figures and Portraits from Hawaii’s Artists
Artist Registration Form

For this juried exhibition, we invite artists of any caliber and experience level in the state of Hawaii who have created life or figure drawing artwork to enter!

With Juror Noreen Naughton

Noreen Naughton is retired as Professor Emerita of Art from Kapiʻolani Community College, University of Hawaiʻi, where she taught drawing and painting, served as visual arts coordinator and initiated the New Media Arts program.  She was awarded the University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents' Excellence in Teaching Award in 1994. Noreen studied at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where she received her MFA degree in painting. She has done graduate work in drawing, painting and sculpture at Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and the New York Studio School in New York City, and post-graduate work at the International School of Art in Umbria, Italy. Noreen has had numerous solo exhibitions in Hawai’i and is represented in local, national and international collections, including the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the Honolulu Museum of Art, and the National Parks Arts Foundation. Recently she was Artist-in-Residence at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, and presented a lecture at the New York Studio School, titled “The Art and Teachings of Nicolas Carone,” based on her book: The Teachings of Nicolas Carone, Master Artist: Narratives, Critiques and Conversations from 1969 to 2010, and in 2018, had an exhibition at the Koa Gallery at Kapiʻolani Community College, titled Nicolas Carone/Noreen Naughton: Sharing the Knowledge, as part of the Carone Centennial Celebration.

JUROR’S STATEMENT

I initially respond to a work of art as an expression. Is the voice of the artist evident and clearly expressed? Then, are all the elements, such as scale, texture, mark-making, proportion, and compositional forces all working together to support this expression and the artist’s intent? Is the language of the artist consistent throughout? If some of the elements of execution are weak, then the impact, or the expression of the artist, is also unsuccessful. It is like a violinist performing a piece of music with deep expression and conviction— but if some passages are not played in tune or with the right intonation, or the rhythmic structure is off, then it results in distraction for those experiencing the expression of this work. I do not judge on content, as this is the artist’s voice, the artist’s expression. I judge on how the expressive content is executed to create a successful work of art.

The First and Second Place awards were given to the two pieces which had the strongest impact on me. But this was a very difficult choice, because so many powerful art works were submitted.

I have a disclaimer, however, that since I viewed the art work only via a digital photograph, I had no idea of the size of the work, whether a piece is 8 inches high or 3 feet high. It was difficult to experience the texture or surface quality of the art work. And, I had no idea of the presentation of the work, in terms of the choice of frame, which often enhances or detracts from the art work, or for three-dimensional sculpture, the selection of an appropriate base. I was also not able to experience the sculpture from multiple views.
I thank each and every artist who submitted artwork to this exhibition. I commend all of you. Keep pursuing your voice, expression, and craftsmanship. It is an ongoing pursuit, to listen to what is important for you to express within yourself, and know the tools to be able to express it.
— Noreen Naughton
